The Red Badge of Courage
In the book, The Red Badge of Courage, Henry Fleming is a younger man than most that are fighting in the Civil War. Specifically he is fighting on the Union side(the North) and is new to the war and fighting. Since he is not familar with the war he doesnt know his strength, mental toughness, or courage. During the war he encounters the hardships of the war, economy, and people. But as the years pass and his expeirence of the war gets better he realizes he can handle it. He is often considered arrogant and is somewhat full of himself. Henry's morale catches up to him also as his best friend Jim was hurt in a battle of the Civil War. As his wounds progress to worse and they get infected, he soon dies and Henry is in a very depressing state. Because of Jim's death, Henry's will to win and fight for his friend lead to his glory and courage in the war. Henry is looking for respect for the elders in the battles so that one day down the road he can be looked at as a hero. But in the opposite matter he fled a battle later on and made himself look cowardish. He later realizes his selfishness gets to him and he is not full of himself any longer. As more battles go on he doesnt care if he makes a name for himself, as long as he stays alive is his main goal. He tries to make up for his mistakes such as retreating by doing his best in battles. If he as learned anything from his expierences, he learned how to be a man.

The Maltese Falcon By: Dashiell Hammett
The Maltese Falcon is a book about a murder mystery and goes into great detail. It involves keeping up with clues and suspects, otherwise you are lost. Dasheill Hammet, the author, is best known for his detective novels. Hammet was very intrigued in Pinkerton spies (spies of the Civil War) that he started to write about private eyes. This detective novel is the only mystery novel I have read and it is very interesting. This book was also created into a movie three times (Dashiell). www.kirjasto.sci.fi/dhammett.htm
It all starts out with a murder and they hire a detective (Sam Spade) to follow a man and watch him. Spade's partner was shot and killed while watching him. Then the Maltese Falcon comes into play, it is worth alot of money and is very valuable. Their is also a beautiful woman and she uses her body and beauty to get what she wants. The Maltese Falcon was retrieved by some people and learned of its value and decided to keep it. Well i guess you will have to pick up the detective novel to see what happens in the end....
At first i didnt quite understand the beginning but as i read more and more it all began to click. Overall i really liked it and i want to read another detective novel like this one because they make you think a little but not too much. It was very interesting and things would happen that made you want to keep reading on. I would not recommend the book if you do not like figuring things out on your own without the author directly telling you the suspect or clue.

My Future
I was bored so i just decided to write about my future. I hope to be in the Engineering field particularly Civil Engineering. I havent decided where exactly i want to go but i am thinking/looking at Duluth Minnesota and School of Mines. Maybe even SDSU...all are good colleges for this major. Everyone thinks i will just come back to the farm and keep the tradition going. Yeah its good money but there is more stress in this occupation than any other,I think. My dad even says if he could have the chance to do something else he would but he grew up around it and didnt know any better. I also hope to get married and have children but lets hope children are a good 10 years down the road. Well that could possibly be my future after high school.

Finally...
I now am finished with all of my comments. It did take me a super long time but it is done, maybe not to perfection or even an 'A' but it is done. Some of the stress was relieved but now i have the "wiki's" to do and that seems like it will take a long time. Not to mention the book report, a research paper, and a test this week. I am sure Mrs. Hansen will find at least one more thing to stress out about though...but she means well. She is preparing us for the future, just it doesnt have to be all at once. Anyway i am going to watch the rest of the 49ers game...wow they really do suck terribly.

1) What was Miller's point of the Crucible?

This website talks about how he studied the Salem Witch Trials and researched it.

2) How are McCarthyism, the Red Scare, Arthur Miller, and The Crucible interrelated?
http://projects.edtech.sandi.net/hoover/crucible/
This site talks about how McCarthyism and the Crucible have results of hysteria that are in the same time periods.
This talks about how they both were a fear, hysteria, false trialing, and the very suspicious events.
3) Document other times in American history when 'witch hunts' were conducted and discuss the outcomes of the Salem witch hunt and the other witch hunts you find. What do they all have in common?
http://members.tripod.com/~HazelWolf/Hazel_Witchhunt.html
This website talks about how Hitler's army invaded France and England. The US then became allies to Germany along with France and Great Britian to defeat the German Army. It also talks about a few other types of witch hunts.
